Controls Engineer

SUMMARY: This position supports projects related to manufacturing from concept, development, implementation and support to include providing technical expertise to the Brownlee-Morrow Family of companies in all aspects of electrical/electronic controls set-up, programming, calibration, and troubleshooting relating to the design & manufacture of rotating equipment systems & utility equipment. Candidate shall be a team player capable of high-level collaboration on projects with sales, engineering, project management, fabrication and customer service. Position requires 50% travel and the ability to stay overnights.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Encourage and maintain safe working environment.
  2. Focus on reaching and maintaining operating goals including: project margins, reduced material cost, & reduced manpower hours while delivering highest quality product.
  3. Responsible for installing, troubleshooting, and programing a variety of Processor Logic Control (PLC) systems, Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), and all other electronic controls equipment. Shall include:
    1. Control Wiring
    1. Programming Danfoss & ABB VFDs
    1. Interface with SCADA systems
  4. Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate various types of field instrumentation as well as interface to control system.  Shall include:
    1. Pressure transmitters
    1. RTD’s
    1. Flow meters
    1. Load cell
    1. Start-up and field commissioning services.
  5. Support or implement Predictive Maintenance monitoring (i.e. Vibration Analysis, Infrared Testing, Oil Sample Testing)
  6. Install control programs as needed for equipment or system functionally.
  7. Responsible for teaching controls operation & troubleshooting and equipment to service/plant
  8. Provide electrical troubleshooting of manufacturing equipment that includes single phase AC circuits, three phase AC circuits, and DC circuits and share knowledge of applicable electrical concepts/principles to other Maintenance personnel.
  9. Be able to execute position requirements with little or no supervision.
  10. Read and update electrical drawings, manuals/schematics, P&ID’s, and instrumentation lists as required.
  11. Provide Bid & Scope of Supply documents as required to meet consulting engineers & distributors project design objectives. Shall include:
    1. Project Take-offs
    1. Specifications Review
    1. One-lines
  12. Maintains high level of controls/electronic technology, developments and applies this knowledge in support of a continuous improvement effort.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in a Technical Field required (Electrical, Information Systems, Computer Science, HVAC or related field preferred)
  2. Three (3) to Five (5) years of industrial maintenance experience or advanced education in electrical, mechanical, or electronics engineering.
  3. Three (3) years minimum of VFD & PLC programming experience. Prefer but not required experience with ABB drives.
  4. Required knowledge includes controls systems, Microsoft office suite, facilities management systems (Modbus, Ethernet, BACNet, etc), site preparation, peripheral equipment installation and servicing techniques. Prefer but not required Autocad or Solidworks experience.
  5. Effective interpersonal skills to properly represent the Brownlee-Morrow Companies to customers and other outside contacts in an ethical and professional manner. 
  6. Ability to explain technical information to technical and non-technical people. 
  7. Position is based in Birmingham, Alabama with 50% travel and overnights required. Company truck and expense account provided.
